Connecting Canadian kids to their Irish roots
The Irish Families in Vancouver group was formed in 2018 by two new parents after a Paddy’s Day spent searching the city for family friendly activities. Paul Mc Cauley and his wife started a Facebook group wondering if there were other Irish who were no longer “new in Vancouver” and were here starting families and also looking for family-friendly activities and social connections. Within 48 hours of starting the online group there were over 200 members and its still growing.
The desire for such a community was evident. Spring 2018 Paul and his wife planned a picnic which was attended by over 50 people, all young families with Irish connections. A committee of volunteers was formed and have since planned Halloween and Christmas parties as well as summer picnics and more. In addition to events the group offers a community for those raising their families while living away from family.
“We feel really strongly about instilling the Irish Culture in our kids,” explains Paul. “We want them to understand and be proud of their heritage beyond leprechauns and green beer once a year. We also wanted to connect with others raising little Irish kids in Canada. It’s our responsibility to teach our kids about Gaelic games, the music, the craic and all the great things Ireland has to offer, while adding the Canadian spin that living in Vancouver provides.”
The Irish Families Group is supported by the Consulate General of Ireland in Vancouver and is a recipient of Emigrant Support Programme funding.
